Patricia A. Carlisle

Patricia A. Carlisle came to PNC in 1982 after almost 17 years of experience at Purdue Calumet and Oakland Community College (MI) as a faculty member, counselor and administrator.  In 1983, she was a member of the team that was successful in obtaining the first Student Support Services program for PNC.  She subsequently became the first Director of what was then called Special Services of Disadvantaged Students and served in that capacity for 16 years leaving in 2000 to become Special Assistant to the Chancellor.  From 1985 until the present, Carlisle has also served as the Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Officer for PNC.  Throughout her career she has consistently been an advocate for women, low-income, first generation and minority students as well as individuals with disabilities.

The policies and procedures established for sSs reflect still to a great extent Carlisle's philosophy in regard to education and leadership development which includes, but is not limited to expectations of equity, fairness and the obligation to "give back."  Carlisle has stated that the TRiO Club (originally TRiO 2000) was established to provide a venue for sSs participants to learn and apply leadership skills through the provision of service to the University and external communities.  Carlisle believes strongly in civic engagement, the responsibility of each person to contribute to his or her community, thus enhancing the community at large and is embedded in the founding of the TRiO Club.  Thus, it is no surprise that providing student with opportunities to gain confidence in their ability to be campus and community leaders and the expectation that they do so have become hallmarks of the PNC sSs program.

Carlisle not only continues to open doors of opportunity to students, faculty, and staff, but serves by example as well.  She currently sits on the Board of Directors for Healthy Communities of LaPorte County, Michiana Resources Inc. and El Puente Community Center as well as serving on the Race Relations Council of Northwest Indiana, Co-chairing the Education Committee of the Race Relations Council, the Advisory Committee for Parents and Teachers and as a PNC representative to the Duneland Chamber of Commerce and the LaPorte County Convention and Visitors Bureau.  She also volunteers for Rebuilding Together Duneland and the Chesterton Wizard of Oz Festival among other community activities.
